Glossary and Hobby jargon

Dont know your OSL from your NMM? This is a guide to some of the wierd crap you might see me waffling about using images I nicked from Google. Handy for begginers.
(Currently this, like most of my models is a WIP so bear with me.)

Flash
FLASH!! AH AHHHHH!!! Flash is the little bits of leftover sprue plastic or metal still attached to a model from the molding process.

Some examples of flash
Mold Lines
Mold lines: Aside from being the bane of all hobbyists mold lines are thin lines of excess plastic or metal that plague models, caused by, surprise surprise, the molding process!

EWWWW!!!!

Priming and Basecoating
A primer coat should be the first coat of paint on a model. Normally black or white, this coat sets the overall tone of the model and provides a smooth surface for future coats.
A base coat usually follows priming and acts as the first coat for a particular colour on a model.

Gradients and Blending
A colour gradient is when two colours gradually fade into one another and is usually acheived by blending. There are a few different types of blending but a common method is to gradually mix/change colours over multiple, thin layers.

Nice work., nicked from warhammer.org.uk

Shading and Highlighting
Shading is painting areas where there would be shadows on a model, whereas highlighting is painting areas that would catch the light. Simples.

I do love a good cape. Image from this stunning tutorial painting-magmatrax-tutorial

OSL
Object Source Lighting Where you use your mad painting skillz to make it appear as though light is coming from an object i.e. a torch, lamp, fire etc.

Zenithal Lighting
Zenith means the very top so zenithal light is light that comes directly from above. Painting miniatures to appear this way is the most common method of highlighting in my experience.

NMM
Non Metallic Metals. This is where you use non metallic paints and super blending and highlighting technique to make objects appear shiny like metal.

Contrast
When two very different things are close to one another. Red and blue, light and dark, me and salad. You get the idea.
